Veni, Vidi, Vici
“I came, I saw, I conquered”. These famous words of the conquering Julius Caesar in 47 BC echoed in the air following the conclusion of the final Barracuda tournament on Sunday 25th November. In conditions that bordered on dangerous with 45mph wind and lifting current, many boats opted to fish under the lee of the land or not at all. Captain Peter “Roo Roo” Roett, who had already wrapped up the overall series championship, went up to the Fathom in these horrible conditions and registered a victory to stamp his authority on the event. Similarly, captain Adam Godson and his crew from the South on Hip-Nautic headed North for the first time to take on the former champs on Lady Joy in their own back yard and try and address the question of who the best really are. The welcome mat up North was hardly what they would have hoped for, but after braving (or crazing) 15ft swells HipNautic returned to port badly bruised but with the most Barracudas on the day, having successfully defended the honour of the Southern fishermen. A lively debate was started when an independent source confirmed seeing Lady Joy approach Maycocks Bay early in the morning before beating a hasty retreat back South. Explanations have ranged from Lady Joy not wanting to stress the boat in the heavy seas to them catching fright after seeing Hip-Nautic in their front garden at first light. Nevertheless, captain Roach and crew on Lady Joy are to be commended for making the long trip down to the weigh in to accept a few celebratory drinks, and to take some inevitable ribbing in true sporting fashion. This level of sportsmanship is what it’s all about folks.

Well the Kingfish tournaments really heated up even though the action was not so good. The sea was flat calm and outside sunny and cool, but action was very slow. Legacy scored an ironic and deserved (according to the local soothsayer) win by a mere 2 lbs over Challenge II who rushed past them early in the morning and dropped lines right in their bow. Reigning Champion Mega Bites hung in there with a narrow 4th place finish to now be 1 point behind current leader Challenge II going into the final tournament. Members are reminded that the winning boat for the Kingfish Series will be the one with the most points accumulated over the three tournaments, and in the unlikely event of a tie, the prize will be shared by the winners. The same will holds true for the Barracuda and Offshore tournaments, and this is not to be confused with the overall Goggle-Eye/Barracuda and Kingfish/Offshore Championships which are decided by tallying the best two tournaments from each series, and which have stated tie-breaker rules which declares the winner out of those whose scores are tied to be the boat with the heaviest Barracuda in the Goggle-Eye/Barracuda series, and heaviest Eligible Species in the Kingfish/Offshore series.
