March 2009 Newsletter

The Offshore tournaments threatened to start with a bang this year, but sanity prevailed in the end as the Captains agreed to postpone the first tournament sponsored by Williams Drilling in the face of a severe weather warning from the Met Office with 28 knot winds and 12 foot seas. The tournament was put back to the following weekend which proved to be a much more pleasant affair with plenty fish and calm seas.... Read more

Veni, Vidi, Vici

“I came, I saw, I conquered”. These famous words of the conquering Julius Caesar in 47 BC echoed in the air following the conclusion of the final Barracuda tournament on Sunday 25th November. In conditions that bordered on dangerous with 45mph wind and lifting current, many boats opted to fish under the lee of the land or not at all. Captain Peter “Roo Roo” Roett, who had already wrapped up the overall series championship, went up to the Fathom in these horrible conditions and registered a victory to stamp his authority on the event. Similarly, captain Adam Godson and his crew from the South on Hip-Nautic headed North for the first time to take on the former champs on Lady Joy in their own back yard and try and address the question of who the best really are. The welcome mat up North was hardly what they would have hoped for, but after braving (or crazing) 15ft swells HipNautic returned to port badly bruised but with the most Barracudas on the day, having successfully defended the honour of the Southern fishermen. A lively debate was started when an independent source confirmed seeing Lady Joy approach Maycocks Bay early in the morning before beating a hasty retreat back South. Explanations have ranged from Lady Joy not wanting to stress the boat in the heavy seas to them catching fright after seeing Hip-Nautic in their front garden at first light. Nevertheless, captain Roach and crew on Lady Joy are to be commended for making the long trip down to the weigh in to accept a few celebratory drinks, and to take some inevitable ribbing in true sporting fashion. This level of sportsmanship is what it’s all about folks.

Mega Bites Chews Up The Competition

Mega Bites Chews Up The Competition

On a day characterized by rough seas and poor fishing (for most), Mega Bites literally chewed up the competition by hooking twice as much as it’s nearest rival and securing maximum points on the day. They added insult to injury by bringing young Jessica Dash along to hook 3 of their 7 fish on a day when many boats caught nothing, and many a seasoned veteran were seen hanging over the side of the boat emptying their bowels. The “Men In Black” as the crew of Mega Bites are called due to their resplendent black uniforms, picked up where they left off last year, and now have a great launching pad to repeat again this season.

“Roo Roo” The Small Boat Champion

The old veteran Peter “Roo Roo” Roett in Cool N’Easy II has emerged as the McEnearney Quality / A&T Marine Small Boat Champion with a tournament to spare. Against all the odds he has shown his younger competitors the way, and has turned in a fine string of performances to take to post overall. The Committee is extremely proud to have Peter win the prize, as he and his crew embody everything they had in mind when the idea emerged about having a prize that rewards someone who is consistently good overall in the small boat category.

Roo Roo Hanging Tough at #1

The Goggle-Eye tournaments ended with a bang, and the old veteran Peter “Roo Roo” Roett in Cool N’Easy II wrapped things up with a comprehensive victory and what could be best described as a family affair with his whole family joining him in the effort this year, and then John Williams and his daughter providing great assistance as well as perhaps getting some needed fresh air for the ‘St. Thomas Fisherman’ from the many boardrooms that he is forced to inhabit these days. Roo Roo overcame engine troubles, youthful exuberance, and newer faster boats with his expert knowledge and skill to take the series comprehensively, and now be in a good position to take the overall Small Boat Championship.

Fearless Rules in Deans Aftermath

Well folks, Hurricane Dean certainly stirred things up, but not in the way some would have liked. The fishing was poor by most people’s standards, but the results certainly make things interesting going into the last tournament. The Banfield boys (thank me for the compliment later Uncle Alan) proved too strong on a night that required lots of hard work and moving around due to lifting current which traditionally is not good for fishing. Second was Hip-Nautic, and given the fact that only your 2 best scores carry through to the overall total, there are now 4 boats who can possibly take a lead into the next round, and the possibility of several being tied on points. This is interesting stuff, and augers well for some keen competition to follow.

Roo Roo In Command

The Goggle-Eye tournaments have gotten off to a flying start, and the old veteran Peter “Roo Roo” Roett dominated proceedings with a fine victory in spite of a broken engine that saw him out of action for some time. He also had a new look crew that featured John “St. Thomas Fisherman” Williams and his beautiful daughter who we understand brought skill and luck to the boat. “Auntie Joy” rounded out the crew, and put the young hot-rods on the other boats in their place with her experience. The other places were keenly contested with a mere 1 lb separating P-Dawg and Tara Too for second and third place. The action continues tomorrow night so let’s hope that hurricane Dean stirred up some fish and that catches are good.
